Arctic char broodstock fishing starts on Lake Kuolimo

Fishing for broodfish of critically endangered arctic char begins in the end of September on Lake Kuolimo in Eastern Finland. The aim is to get enough mature adult char and form from their eggs and milt a basis of a new broodstock that will be kept on the Saimaa aquaculture station in Enonkoski.

During the catching period 9 trap-nets are set on Isoselkä open water area of Lake Kuolimo. The setting of the tackle begins on September 26 and fishing will continue to the end of October.

The staff of Finnish Game and Fisheries Research Institute will take care of the handling of mature fish, but because the traps will be checked daily, also volunteers are taken along the project.
